I took my car in yesterday to get my powersteering line repaired from a leak as well as get an oil change and fix the front driverside headlight and get a new tire for the from passanger side since it was leaking. I also asked for them to add freon for the AC while they were at it. The guy calls back and tells me looks like the AC power lines were broken and that needs to be repaired along with doing the freon charge (Least to say they were not broken before so don't know where that came from). Then today I get a call and the guy tells me that my check engine light and battery light came on and it might be my battery or alternator (Funny since before I came in nothing like that was happening before they touched it). Now they are telling me if it's the atlernator they will have to charge me to fix it but I think something they did has caused it and I should have no responsibility for charges. Spoke to the manager and he says if it is something they did then they will fix it no charge but if it's my alternator then they will charge me (Why should I be charge when that was not an issue since today?????)

What do you do in this case?

your first mistake was letting these amateurs near your car in the first place. its well known that some of these shops might be ok, there's no way of knowing, and its just too big a risk.

your second mistake was to not pull your car out of there at the first sign of trouble. these places are notorious for messing up things on your car (maybe out of incompetence and not just malice), then asking for more money to fix what they broke.

i recommend you get your vehicle out of there as fast as possible before there is any further destruction takes place.

absolutely do not authorize any more 'work', and refuse to pay if they have gone ahead and done it without your approval.

immediately your vehicle take it to a competent mechanic (maybe through the referral of a friend), and get a full damage report.

that should tell you if there's any option for asking for a refund on any parts or labour.

next time, be smarter and don't even let these yahoos get close to your ride.

good luck - you are going to need it!

Why did u need to add "freon" which by the way is an outlawed product and has been replaced many moons ago by an environmentally friendly a/c chemical....but anyways/? The reason you need to recharge an AC system is because the chemical (R134) has left your system. A/C systems are sealed systems so the only way for it to be low, is to have a leak in the system. There are three components that leak in an ac system. Lines, compressor and condensor. The leaks are so small they can not be detected by the naked human eye. If the system was low, it was leaking.

Lastly, if they chagne your alternator, ask for it back. You can take it to another shop or parts store and they can bench test it out of the car, usually at no charge. Find out the truth. If it was dead, turn it back in for the core charge.

You really are a loser. Calling Technicians amateurs, after they have spent several years an a apprentice, and several more at school indicates that you have no comprehension on what it takes to be successful. A certified technician, no matter where they work, all go through the same program. I'm embarassed for your stupidity and lack of relevance.

Good advice when dealing with Crappy Tire - they say they aren't "amateurs", but their actions say otherwise.

Lots of stories like this, on many web sites.

It's really just not worth the risk of letting these so-called technicians touch anything.

Canadian Tire doesn't always hire certified technicians, and everyone knows that crappy tire is notorious for ripping people off in the auto-shop!! Crappy tire mechanics blow chunks!
