My Daughter brought her car into Canadian Tire Monday Dec 13/2010 because her front end was smoking and she wasn't getting any heat in her car. They hoisted her car up, gave her an oil change and told her there might be a clog in her thermostate. She took the car home and on Wednesday it started smoking again. She stopped driving it and got it towed to Chevy. At this point she melted her rad and the head on her motor. So now Chevy wants $1700, Canadian Tire doesn't seem to think it was their fault cuz it wasn't written on the work order and now she has no car. If the problem would have been fixed properly at Canadian Tire in the first place her car would not have exceeded these damages. Wow, all they can say was it wasn't written on the work order. So apparently that's my problem now.

This is sadly typical of many stories I have heard about the incompetence of CT mechanics.

I'm just a car owner, but it sounds to me like any decent mechanic should have diagnored the smoking/no-heat problem, and let her know not to drive it because the engine could burn out. Hopefully the paperwork with CT lists the overheating symptoms, which they messed up on.

And to waste time and money on an oil change? Even I know that won't correct an overheating problem (although tranny fluid may have).

If you are a CAA member, they can offer advice on dealing with a mechanic who made an error. Also the Automobile Protection Agency (APA) is a non-profit group that might be able to advise you, too.

Be prepared for CT to claim that the engine was burned out before they even saw it, but even that would have been something they'd missed - why offer an oil change on a ruined engine? Also, they may claim that all was fine when she drove away (especially if the "thermostat" advise was only verbal).

Hopefully you can get some compensation, but it's still a painful lesson on the incompetence of CT mechanics. See the thread on this site about the CBC news story in Vancouver. At least your young lady wasn't put in danger.

Wow, incredible... Something extremely similar happened to me right around the same date. I car was starting to lose power gradually (lights dimming until fading, heaters slowly getting lower, radio sporadically turning off until coming completely off), all signs of a faulty alternator especially considering that the car seemed to be doing a bit better whenever I started it up after shutting it off for a few hours.

Anyways, so I manage to bring my car to the Canadian Tire, talk to one of the mechanics, and offer my opinion on the alternator. He quickly agrees with me, and tells me he will call me the next day. Here I am next morning, getting a call from the CT telling me they changed my battery. Ummm.... are you sure, I ask? Positive. Okay... if you say so.

The next day, since I'm a university student, I was on my way to go home (an 8h drive). About 1h30 in, my car starts having the same symptoms... I get lucky and stall right next to a towing truck, and he tows me to a little garage in the middle of nowhere. I have to sleep there, so hotel, towing gets to around 200$.

The little garage tells me the next morning it was clearly the alternator, and is just stunned that CT didn't detect it. When I get back from my holidays, I go to CT an expect them to at least be responsible for parts of the 200$, but according to them, I don't understand and I'm a bad person, it was my fault, they have top-of-the-line equipment, and the other garage got lucky. The manager was even mocking my situation and really seemed to diss me completely.

I will try and talk with the owner of that particular CT (althought I doubt it will do any good) and will send a formal letter to M. Butts (Head of CT Auto Repair), but it's alsmost not about the money anymore; it's about their total lack of any integrity.

My crappy tire location only has one eye wash station and it's at the end of a long maze of storage sh!t. I have seen it once but still can't find it again, but hey you get what you pay for, still better than wild west at west Edm mall, cheap as boss who sells dangerous ammo that her bf packs himself in their basement, seen too guns blow up already,

Mostly this thread has been about Crappy Tire taking advantage of young customers, but we've also been hearing how they take advantage of young workers, too.

You might want to look into the regulations for emergency eye-wash stations. There could be rules in your area, about the stations being more accessible. An anonymous call to the labour ministry or other agency might get this addressed. It just doesn't sound like it's going to be usable.

I'm not sure about the ammo. issue. If they aren't approved to produce it for re-sale, or if they are mis-representing it as factory-made, I imagine they could be in trouble.

But, if two guys already 'blew up', wouldn't the people who produced it be in a lot of trouble already?

Who is this "voice" person, and why are they spewing nonsense? And why on this thread, in particular?

There seems to be no 'reason' at all!
