Avoid!!!

I came to their service department to get my federal RIV inspection done. I normally try to avoid CT but there are not many choices in Calgary for getting the RIV inspection. There is only one nonCT shop in the city that does it. I thought that since I was there I might as well have them do the Out of Province inspection too.

I have a 2005 car... very nice car... no problems with it at all.

I got the call later in the day that the cost to bring my car up to Provincial standards was well over $3000. I said forget it. There is no way I am giving them that much money. I went back and paid them for the federal inspection, the provincial inspection, and for installing daytime running lights (required by the fed as we all know) $450.

I found another shop and took my car there with a new inspection form in hand. I knew I would have to pay the inspection fee again but I was sure it would NOT require $3000 in repairs.

It passed the inspection with one small violation. The cost was a whopping 400. Bif sigh of relief. I trusted my gut and it was right.

So if you are importing a vehicle from the US, DONT ALLOW CT to do your out of province inspection!!!

Not sure if Alberta is the same as BC but the inspection facilities are audited monthly and many disreputable shops have been shut down in the last year and I hear it's over 150 already. There is some shady business with that whole inspection process.

Lots of bad mechanics out there but Crappy Tire seems to have more than their fair share. It's almost like they plan to cheat you even before you come through the door. Any excuse to run a scam on you. This place really does suck!!!!

I also just found that the daytime running light dont work either. I wont even take it back there. I would rather have someone that knows what they are doing and pay them again for their time.

Guess what then....whoever did your safety inspection failed. if they passed a vehicle without daytime running lights functioning, they missed.

If i'm in your shoes i'm asking what else did they miss to keep your cost down

Nice try... Thats very typical to try to instill any doubt in the customers mind. Doubt leads to fear and fear leads to spending more money.

*update*

I have learned that the daytime running lights were working as designed. They are intended to run at a lower voltage so it appeared to me that they were not working. I found out about this yesterday. So I was wrong when I said they were not working. Thats why it passed the safety inspection.

I am NOT concerned at all about what they may have missed during the safety inspection.

Since my experience at CT I have taken my car to 2 different shops. Once for the provincial inspection and another for regular maintenance. In both cases I asked about ALL the items listed by CT. I wanted to be certain my gut was right. In both cases they couldnt find anything wrong with those items. The most recent shop said my tires will need to be replaced in 6 months. Big deal... that wasn't on the CT list and they are due for it.

This all just convinces me more amd more I did the right thing.

I have never and will never return to *any* CT store for *any* reason whatsoever.
