I just returned from yet another lovely experience in the Canadian Tire Corporation (CTC) store in Napanee and I thought I‘d share.
We had some shopping to do and I needed some cleaning items so I thought I’d go to CTC rather than anywhere else... big mistake. I only needed 3 things, which I found, and proceeded to the checkout. I attempted to use the automated checkout, another big mistake, it refused to work. It scanned my items but then told me to wait for help. No help..!! I looked round but no one was on duty and the other clerks just ignored me, like “it’s not my responsibility”.
I have used these machines in other stores, Home Depot, Walmart etc and they work fine but the automated checkouts in CTC always seem to be in trouble. I have yet to make a successful transaction with these.
So with no one coming to my aide I picked up my items and proceeded to the Customer Service desk. (Yet another mistake; I should have just left.) There I was met by a middle-aged woman to whom I said “you should get them to take out those machines they never seem to work”. She snapped back at me “It’s not my store, I can’t get them to do anything”. I said to her “well they never seem to work”. She replied “It’s not my problem”. I then asked her if she was happy in her job. She replied “yes until she had to deal with customers”. I suggested she should find a position she would be happier in, and at this point I asked to speak to the Store Manager.
After some time and several calls on the PA system a man named Jerry showed up. I explained to him that the automated checkouts continued to cause problems and I also pointed out the attitude of this woman at Customer Service. I also suggested he explain to her that if she is unhappy with her position she should quit and let someone have it who actually understands the meaning of the phrase Customer Service. Jerry listened, obviously totally disinterested and didn’t make comment. I left realizing there was no point in continuing.
This only one issue out of many occurrences at this particular store. Ask anyone in the area and they will tell you the Napanee store is inferior to other CTC stores. Most people only go there because they don’t have the time to drive to Kingston or Belleville. This store has had a captive audience far too long and has become indifferent to the folks that keep it in business.
I for one am tired of dealing at this particular store for a number of reasons.
They are:
1) automated systems that the staff doesn’t appear to have sufficient knowledge of to make them work.
2) arrogant, ignorant, belligerent staff that are not capable of grasping the idea of “service”.
3) inflated prices that are not competitive with other stores in the area. (one of the items I purchased on this day, Spray Nine cleaner, was $14+ at CTC yet we discovered it was $12+ at Walmart. Same 2 litre size. That’s a big difference.)
4) items offered in local fliers are not available at this store and rain cheques are not offered.
So in summary:
I will never set foot inside this store as long as I live.
The money I would spend in CTC from this day forward I will spend most of it in other stores like Walmart.
If I need auto parts I will deal with the folks in CTC in Kingston on Hwy 38. They are great and actually offer service.
My deepest wish would be for CTC Napanee to close and the staff all lose their jobs. They deserve what they get.
