horrible pay for experience

Hey so first time poster here just found the website. Pretty frustrated with Canadian tire. Long story short they pay crap, even when your bringing dealership experience. I worked for a GM dealer that recently closed, and in a pinch, took a job there. So far thats probably the biggest mistake of my life so far. continuing to work there would be #2. I have 2 years of dealership experience and am a level 2 apprentice when i get back from school soon. I have made minimum wage, 9.50/hr for almost 9 months. I was promised raises, bonuses, etc when i got back from school that wont ever happen. There cheap, liars and manipulators. They know how to keep staff there with false promises and lies. Eventually you figure it out and the jig is up. Since I started there the autoservice has had about 12 people work there in 9 months. I barely remember half the peoples names. Another important point is the majority were about 17-19, had 0 experience, and borrow tools off others. I've seen 3 motors replaced due fuck ups with these kids. 2 for never having oil and 1 for a loose drain plug. Thank god they at least keep them away from brakes. Id boycott canadian tire and take your car back to the dealer, or at least someone at a smaller shop that you can build trust with. just my $0.02

You MUST be a CT employee with that attitude, not competent enough, give your head a shake. The thread here is shitty pay to go along with shitty work conditions, how you get competency of someone who was sucked into at age 16, by some owner of a crappy tire to work for less than minimum wage. I was competent enough to do brakes and tires and value the experiance that I got some 35 years ago, I was just taken advantage of by some money hungry prick that wanted cheap labour. At least I can change my own oil and service my vehicales properly which is more than I can say for some CT employees

I worked in the auto service centre at a CT store and it was the worst job of my life.
I've 25 years experience as a qualified tech and was lured there by talk of big money to be made.
When I was working there you spent a lot of time standing around and not earning anything as the pay was flat rate and the shop was so mismanaged and had such a bad reputation that there was no work coming through the door.
The talk of big money was of course complete fabrication and the other guys just laughed when we were chatting and said they were told the same thing.
The store owner didn't care about the shop conditions and the managers were only in it for themselves.
The guys I worked with were really nice and all highly experienced techs but the system sucked.

I agree with you, I am pretty disappointed with the employment there, the money sucks but worst of all is how we treat the customers, shameful to say the least.

This is correct, the only problem is that the owners have to do what the Corporation wants or dictates. As far as pay goes, that is the individual owners choice. Same as how they treat customers.

This would be of use to customers, to get a better idea of what support they can get from head office.

It also might help customers understand the motives that the owners have, to behave in certain ways (like supposedly allowing returns, when other owners refuse to do so).

And, in what other ways do the individual owners have choices? That might be useful to consumers, too.

I dont have any of the formal agreements for CTC. What I can tell you is the owner is in charge of the ordering, the pay for employees, incentive programs that the store sets up(if any). They are also responsible for the layout with input from the Corp.

As far as shoddy workmanship, I can only speak for our shop. We do make good for customers if we F#$% up a vehicle. This is up to the manager however and doesnt always happen. In our shop like many others, there is nepatism and favourtism. The people in charge of the shop have almost never run a shop in their life and dont know anything but sales. Thus, the shop is sales driven and not customer driven. If you happen to find a CT shop that is run by a proper manager that knows auto, that shop will be run well and not get a bad reputation. Talking with a customer the other day, Im afraid to say that the shop I am at now has a bad reputation and it is getting worse.

As far as returns go, CT should honour any return policy set out by law, no one can get around that.

As far as auto goes, I have been in the business of repair for 25 years, now I am a service advisor and see stuff that makes my stomach turn. I do love Canadian companies and try to support Canadian as much as possible, that is why I am looking for another "Canadian" job.
